JOURNEY OF HOPE WITH RODNEY MATHERS » Blog Archive » Journey of Hope With Rodney Mathers (111)Hi Everyone!

Hope everyone is having a great holiday season. ( What I really wanted to say was Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah but I was advised that this no longer cuts it in our politically sensitive world.) Which brings up an interesting point.

In my 16 years plus as a teacher and coach, it was and still is my opinion that our children are overly coddled. I never met a school counselor that was nothing more than an enabler. The result from that sort of thing spills out into our general societal perceptions about almost everything.  We must say things like "mentally challenged", "special needs", and oh, my favorite, "African American", or is the appropriate terminology "black" this year.....I lose track.

What about ex-offenders? Shouldn't we be called "penal code challenged"? Maybe the correct term should be "temporarily legally indifferent". Obviously this is ridiculous but it does illustrate a point. We have gone way over-bored with the political correctness. Some people, like "vertically challenged" me, may even assert that this country's ever increasing shift to left may be a direct result of all this determination not to offend anyone like a student's parents, a black person, the list goes on and on (but not an ex-offender because it's o.k. to speak to them anyway you want to....right?)  Just a little fodder for thought.

I would like for you to pretend I'm screaming this as loud as I can...............ready?......MERRY CHRISTMAS!

My guest this week is licensed family and marriage therapist Claudia Franzosi. We discussed a variety of issues that are are all beneficial to an ex-offender and his/her family and loved ones. Claudia touches on everything from PTSD to relationships To dealing with stress in a discussion that is packed full of useful information.

JOURNEY OF HOPE WITH RODNEY MATHERS » Blog Archive » Journey of Hope With Rodney Mathers (110)Hi Yall!

I really like to talk to people that have turned their lives around. It seems to me, having worked toward doing it myself, that it is an immensely difficult task that takes a level of determination and persistence that far exceed any other challenge I have faced in life. Yet, it is indeed doable! There is no doubt in my mind that you have the ability and the courage necessary to put that event, addiction, situation, whatever it was that cost you your freedom, in your rear view mirror and to begin the productive life you you were meant to live. I like to find examples of people who have actually done this and present them to you in the chance that something they did to get things right is something you can use on your journey.

My guest this week, C.K.Webb is an ex-offender. She is also an author,  a reviewer and contributor to various publications, and hosts her own show on BlogTalk Radio. Join me this week as we speak with C.K. Webb about her past and her future.

JOURNEY OF HOPE WITH RODNEY MATHERS » Blog Archive » Journey of Hope With Rodney Mathers (109)Hello Everybody!

Well, it's that time of the year again...vigilante season. I have a few thoughts for sex offenders.

First, if you are on probation or parole and you put skeletons and goblins on your yard for Halloween and pretty lights in your windows for Christmas, you are an idiot. Period. It doesn't matter what the rules are for your jurisdiction. Don't do it.

For those of you, like me, who have completely discharged your sentence, you most likely have no restrictions in this regard. (PLEASE don't take my word for it and check with your local authorities). I have no restrictions. I can decorate and participate any way I chose to. However it is my opinion, for what it's worth, that any sex-offender that does the lights and decoration thing is not thinking straight. What you are guarding against is the possibility perceived inappropriateness. Among your priorities of not creating another victim, and doing good for society, it is also important to cover your ass at all times. That includes the perception that you have taken your conviction too lightly.

Never give that vigilante mind set even the smallest morsel of fodder! Keep focused on doing the right thing and you will be fine.

My guest this week is Arnold Harvey. Wow! This dude has an amazing story of overcoming adversity and has written a book about it called Every Decision Matters Be sure and click on the link after you listen to his amazing story as told during our interview.

JOURNEY OF HOPE WITH RODNEY MATHERS » Journey Of Hope With Rodney Mathers (105)Hi Everybody!

My guest this week is Dr. Kathrine Kelly. Dr. Kelly is a champion for holistic healing and it is her thoughts on "conscious evolution" that I found interesting for ex-offenders. During our discussion on this week's show, Dr. Kelly explains how this is the only true way to a complete healing that is a permanent resolution and the precursor to optimal health.

We also spend some time talking about the importance of dealing properly with the stressors in our lives as we move through the reintegration process.

Her new book: Soul Health: Alligning with Spirit for Radient Living  goes even deeper into how to experience "conscious evolution". I highly recommend it.

JOURNEY OF HOPE WITH RODNEY MATHERS » Journey of Hope With Rodney Mathers (104)Welcome!

It is a fact that fifty percent of all North American children experience the divorce of the their parents. Fourty percent of children today are being raised without their fathers according to today's guests, Tracy Duff and Daniella Rigon. Can you immagine what those numbers are like for ex-offenders?

Daniella and Tracy have pooled their life experiences to present through their book, Blendeda blue print of sorts showing what has worked for them in their divorced lives. Making the decision to divorce, how to tell the children, when to introduce a new partner to the children, how to handle discipline with the children, and suggestions on creating consistent rules are just some of the issues we discuss during our interview.

Hello to my new best friend from Seattle. Best friend because there was a  complement on my bumper music. I have done 104 shows and although I mention from time to time that I write and record all of the music for the show, no one has ever mentioned it in any correspondence.

To answer Seattle's question, the song I end with every week is called "Free". I wrote and recorded it about two years ago. Yes, I do play all of the instruments on my recordings except for drums. For drums I use the Alesis 1600 . Thank you for your very cool question! You made my week!

Hello everyone and welcome!
Miriam Goodman has written a book called Too Much Togetherness:Surviving Retirement As A Couple and when she contacted me about doing the show I initially thought it was a little off topic. However, I continued to consider it because I got to thinking that, hey, ex-offenders retire too!
In fact, I found this topic to be a very important part of an ex-offenders life. Whether we are talking about retirement in the near future or just the very beginning of planning, this is a fantastic episode of JOH!

JOURNEY OF HOPE WITH RODNEY MATHERS » Journey of Hope With Rodney Mathers (94)Hey There!
An often overlooked aspect of the incarceration process is the the family members that must take the full load of responsibility while their loved one is locked-up. A spouse will in fact have to function as a single parent if there are children envolved.

She is now the CEO and founder of an organization called SMOOTH (Single Mothers Overcoming Our True Hurt), and the Author of Secret Struggles of The Single Mother
Betty has a great conversation with me on this week's episode and includes some some practical advice for the spouses awaiting the return of a loved one from incarceration on the how to get by.

Journey of Hope With Rodney Mathers (91)

Welcome to this week's Episode.
Is it possible to extract positive qualities from a life that has taken devistating turns? I believe so. In fact, what real choice do we as ex-offenders have - other than giving up? I know you, like me refuse to entertain thoughts of the later.
My guest this week, Dale Stanten, has been through some devistating circumstances and has come out on top. I love these stories because there is always something...some little tid-bit of advice I can pull and apply to my situation. I think you will find something useful in Dale's story too.

Hi Yall!
Do you or someone you know have problems sleeping upon returning home from incarceration? I know I sure did. How about the issue of addressing pain management without perscription narcotics.... My guest this week, Dr. Kathy Gruver, is an expert in Holistic medicine and she discusses some approaches about these issues and others on this week's episode.
Poor Kathy, I really put her through the ringer prior to the interview. I screwed up the time and the initial phone call but she demonstrated a great deal of patience over it all and she gets a gold star for that!

Welcome! My guest this week, Carolyn Jones, is an author, life coach and speaker. She has lived the life of addiction and overcame it. Her story is full of tid-bits I'm sure you can use as you continue to strive to be your best.
Carolyn was inspired to overcome the fears associated with the publication of her book by her friend Ronin Holmes who was a guest at a nice little place called San Quentin at the time. Ronnin so inspired Carolyn that she mentions him on the jacket of her book.
